History's most controversial Pope; Vatican open Archives.

Image
The Vatican unseals the archives of history's most contentious popes on Monday, potentially shedding light on why Pius XII stayed silent during the extermination of six million Jews in the Holocaust. Two hundred researchers have already requested access to the mountain of documents, made available after an inventory that took more than 14 years for Holy See archivists to complete. Award-winning German religious historian Hubert Wolf will be in Rome on Monday, armed with six assistants and two years of funding to start exploring documents from the "private secretariat" of the late pope. Wolf, a specialist on the relationship of Pius XII with the Nazis, is anxious to discover the notes of the his 70 ambassadors -- the pontiff's eyes and ears during his time as head of the Catholic Church between 1939 and his death in 1958. There should also be records of urgent appeals for help from Jewish organisations, as well as his communications with the late US Preside

Here are some of the claims spreading online, and the facts you need to know about them. ___ CLAIM: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people shave off facial hair to protect against the new coronavirus. Court dismisses DC wine bar lawsuit against Trump Hotel.

Image
Getty Images A federal appeals court on Friday threw out a lawsuit filed by a local Washington, D.C., wine bar against President Trump's hotel in the city, ruling that the business had failed to establish legal grounds for its case.  A three-judge panel on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals said in its decision that Cork Wine Bar could not make a valid claim that the Trump International Hotel has an unfair competitive advantage over its business because of Trump's status as president. Cork, located about 1.5 miles north of the Trump hotel, sued the hotel in March 2017 in the D.C. court system, arguing that its clientele had been flocking to the president's establishment since he took office.  "Cork, like other hospitality businesses, seeks to attract both foreign and domestic customers including government, political, legal and lobbying leaders," the company wrote in a court filing last May. "Because the Trump Hotel and its restaurants

Egyptian Ex-President Mubarak dies at 91

Image
Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian leader who for nearly 30 years was the resolute face of stability in the Middle East, died on Tuesday, the country’s state television said, ending his days after a swift and ignominious tumble from power in the Arab world’s pro-democracy upheaval. He was 91. Throughout his rule, he was a stalwart U.S. ally, a bullwark against Islamic militancy and guardian of Egypt’s peace with Israel. But to the tens of thousands of young Egyptians who rallied for 18 days of unprecedented street protests in Cairo’s central Tahrir Square and elsewhere in 2011, Mubarak was a relic, a latter-day pharaoh. They were inspired by the Tunisian revolt, and harnessed the power of social media to muster tumultuous throngs, unleashing popular anger over the graft and brutality that shadowed his rule. In the end, with millions massed in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and city centers around the country and even marching to the doorstep of Mubarak’s palace, the military that long nur
