Former Walmart Worker Wins $125 Million in Lawsuit After Being Fired by the Company

Image
A former  Walmart  employee with  Down’s Syndrome  has just been awarded $125 million after the company fired her. Whew, Walmart just had to hand over a multi-million dollar bag because it broke the American Disabilities Act, which bans anyone and any company from discriminating against anyone with a disability. Marlo Spaeth has worked at Walmart for about 16 years. A “very hard worker” is what her managers have called her. But, in 2015, her Walmart job – located in Manitowoc, Wisconsin – fired her after they abruptly changed her work shift schedule to one that was a conflict for her. Back in 2014, the store implemented a new scheduling system that analyzes the amount of customer traffic so that there can be enough staffing during specific busy hours. Spaeth’s noon to 4 p.m. shift was changed to 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., The New York Times reports. Concerned with the sudden change, Spaeth and her family reportedly told the grocery store giant that after the 2014 rota change that

Indonesians celebrate Eid al-Adha festival under COVID-19 curbs

Image
Millions of Muslims in Indonesia on Tuesday celebrated Eid al-Adha, one of the most important Islamic festivals, as President Joko Widodo pledged that tighter coronavirus restrictions would remain in place until infections dropped. Indonesia is now Asia’s COVID-19 hot spot with the most confirmed daily cases, as infections and deaths have surged over the past three weeks and India’s massive outbreak has waned. Most of Indonesia’s cases are on the densely populated island of Java, where more than half of the country’s 270 million people live. Authorities in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation have banned many of the crowd-attracting activities that are usually part of Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice that marks the end of the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. Authorities allowed prayers at local mosques in low-risk areas, but elsewhere houses of worship had no congregations, including Jakarta’s Istiqlal Grand Mosque, the largest in So

Peru’s electoral authority on Monday named socialist Pedro Castillo as the country’s next president, having officially won the June 6 runoff against right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori, who accepted the result but said she had been cheated. The official result had been delayed by appeals from Fujimori aimed at annulling some ballots over fraud accusations. She said she was nonetheless bound by law to recognize the ruling of the National Jury of Elections. “I proclaim Pedro Castillo as president of the republic and Dina Boluarte as first vice president,” elections chief Jorge Salas said during a televised ceremony on Monday night. Earlier in the day, Fujimori said she would recognize the official result “because it is what the law and the constitution that I have sworn to defend, mandates. Virgin Galactic's Branson ready for space launch aboard rocket plane

Image
British billionaire Richard Branson was due on Sunday to climb into his Virgin Galactic passenger rocket plane and soar more than 50 miles above the New Mexico desert in the vehicle's first fully crewed test flight to the edge of space. Branson, one of six Virgin Galactic Holding Inc  (SPCE.N)  employees strapping in for the ride, has touted the flight as a precursor to a new era of space tourism, with the company he founded poised to begin commercial operations next year. A discount travel service it is not. But demand is apparently strong, with several hundred wealthy would-be citizen astronauts already having booked reservations, priced at around $250,000 per ticket. The Swiss-based investment bank UBS has estimated the potential value of the space tourism market reaching $3 billion annually by 2030.
