Soludo emerges victorious in Anambra Gubernatorial election.

Former governor of the Central Bank and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chukwuma Soludo, has been declared winner of the Anambra governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The Returning Officer of the Anambra governorship election, Prof Florence Obi, declared him the winner at the Anambra INEC office in Awka, the state capital this morning, November 10. According to Obi, Soludo polled a total of 112,229 votes to beat his closest rival, Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 53,807 votes, and Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress who polled a total of 43,285 votes. Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressive Party who polled 21,261 votes came fourth.

COVID-19: NCDC announces 166 additional infections, total now 211,496

The Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) has announced additional 166 COVID-19 new infections from 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the country.  The NCDC, via its verified website on Thursday, notes that the 166 fresh cases indicate an increase from the 159 cases posted on Tuesday. The Public Health Agency noted that till date, 211,496 cases have been confirmed, 202,930 cases discharged and 2,886 deaths recorded in 36 states and the FCT. It added that the 166 new cases were in Delta-36, the FCT-22, Rivers-21, Lagos-20, Anambra-18, Ondo-17, Oyo-8, Kebbi-6, Enugu-5, Plateau-5, Ebonyi-3, Kano-2, while, Bayelsa, Ekiti and Jigawa reported one case each. “Today’s report includes: 6 confirmed cases reported from Kebbi state for Oct. 26, 2021, and the five confirmed cases reported from Enugu state on Oct. 26, 2021. “Twenty discharged cases were reported from Enugu state on Oct. 26, and five discharged cases reported from Taraba state the same day are commu

Blessing Okagbare suspended after failed drugs test

Sprinter Blessing Okagbare is out of the Tokyo Olympics after being suspended for failing a drugs test. The Nigerian - a rival to Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith - had won her 100m heat on Friday and was due to race in the semi-finals on Saturday. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said the 32-year-old had tested positive for a human growth hormone following an out-of-competition test on 19 July. The AIU said Okagbare was notified of her provisional suspension on Saturday. It added it would not be making any further comment at this stage. Okagbare, Olympic long jump silver medallist in Beijing in 2008, had posted a time of 11.05 seconds in her 100m heat and was set to line up against Asher-Smith and Jamaica's Elaine Thompson-Herath in the first semi-final. The news comes two days after 10 other Nigerian athletes were declared ineligible for the Games. Emirates restricted from operating in Nigeria.

The Federal Government says Emirates Airlines has been included in the list of airlines not allowed to operate in Nigeria as part of measures to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country. Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, made this known via his Twitter handle on Friday. He said the decision was taken after a meeting between members of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and European Union ambassadors. He said the ban would take effect from Monday, September 21, 2020. “The PTF sub-committee met today with EU Ambassadors to discuss Lufthansa, Air France/KLM ban. The meeting progressed well. Emirates Airlines’s situation was reviewed & they are consequently included in the list of those not approved, with effect from Monday the 21st September 2020,” he tweeted.

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has ordered the investigation  into the murder of 22-year old Uwa Omozuwa. She died three days after she was violently raped inside a Miracle Sanctuary parish, Redeemed Christian Church of God located at  44, Osa Amadasun street, off Agbor road, Benin city. Uwaila was a first year student of Microbiology in the University of Benin before she was murdered. She was a regular visitor to the church where she goes to read. Her Mother and her siblings have been members of the church for 15 years. Meanwhile, the Pastor of  the Church in Benin City, escaped a mob action by aggrieved youths and family members of the 22-year-old. It took the timely intervention of the Police to avert a mob action when the Pastor of the Church went on a condolence visit to the family of the deceased. Anambra State records first COVID-19 death.

Anambra State Government has confirmed its first COVID-19 related death in the state. The deceased is a 66-year-old man who was among the 10 confirmed positive cases in the state. The State Governor, Willie Obiano made the announcement during a special broadcast on Monday. He noted that the victim did not report to the health authorities early enough. “People of Anambra,  it is important to explain here that the only COVID-19 death we have recorded so far was a 66-year old man who did not report his ill-health on time. “The case was reported late to the hospital and by the time his result came back positive, 24 hours later, he had passed away.” Obiano also announced that there are 10 confirmed cases of the infection in the state, out of which three cases including the index case have recovered from treatment and discharged. Pregnant COVID-19 patient delivered of a baby boy in Lagos.

The Lagos State Government has announced that a pregnant COVID-19 patient was delivered of a baby boy at the Gbagada Isolation center. Gov. Babajide Sanwo-olu shared the good news and also confirmed that the mother and child are in good condition.

386 new cases of coronavirus reported in Nigeria.

Nigeria reported record high daily cases for the second day, with the total cases in the country close to 4,000. The Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, on Friday (May 8), reported that 386 new cases of the deadly Coronavirus has been recorded in the country, a figure published on their Official Twitter account. Lagos, the epicenter of the disease in the country saw 176 cases, while Kano followed With 65 cases.
